The communities of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Greenwood, Indiana, are mourning the heartbreaking and unexpected passing of Amanda Ashley Callahan, who died on May 24, 2026, at the age of 26. Her sudden departure has left family members, friends, colleagues, and loved ones in deep grief as they reflect on a life defined by kindness, creativity, and an extraordinary love for animals.
Born on June 4, 1999, in Aurora, Illinois, Amanda was the cherished daughter of John and Barbara Callahan. From an early age, she was known for her curiosity, intelligence, and vibrant personality. She explored a wide range of interests throughout her childhood, including softball, dance, piano, and guitar, and later became an active member of her high school choir at Yorkville High School.
Amanda went on to pursue studies in neuroscience at Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), where she continued to demonstrate both academic dedication and a strong desire to understand the world around her. Those who knew her during her academic journey describe her as thoughtful, driven, and deeply engaged in her field of study.
Beyond academics, Amanda’s greatest passion was her love for animals. This devotion became central to her life and work, especially during her time at Dogtopia, where she cared for dogs daily. Coworkers remember her as someone who brought patience, warmth, and genuine joy into every interaction. Her presence created a calm and loving environment for both animals and people alike.
Amanda’s love for animals extended into her personal life, where she cared deeply for her own pets, including her dogs Ryder and Dogmeat, and her cats Rukia, Toph, and 2B. Her bond with them reflected her nurturing nature and deep sense of responsibility toward all living beings.
Outside of work and school, Amanda embraced a wide variety of interests. She enjoyed horror films, reading, attending concerts, gaming, and thrifting. Friends describe her as authentic, expressive, and full of personality—someone who never hesitated to be herself and encouraged others to do the same.
Her vibrant spirit, quick wit, and compassionate heart left a lasting impression on everyone who met her. Whether through friendships, work, or family life, Amanda had a unique ability to make people feel understood, valued, and accepted.
Amanda is survived by her loving parents, John and Barbara Callahan; her brother Jake Callahan and sister-in-law Leah Callahan; her niece Emma Callahan; and her partner Chris Purvis. She also leaves behind a wide circle of extended family, friends, and colleagues who deeply cherished her presence in their lives. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Kazuko Callahan and Don Carlson.
In honor of her life, a remembrance service is scheduled for June 13, 2026, in Batavia, Illinois, where loved ones will gather to celebrate her memory and the impact she made during her lifetime.
Though her time was far too short, Amanda Callahan will be remembered for her compassion, authenticity, and unwavering love for animals and people alike. Her legacy continues through the lives she touched and the kindness she shared so freely.
